Day 13: Hopium Dependency: Honor Your Emotions…Don’t just shove them in a drawer.


 “Aren’t you embarrassed? You are embarrassing

yourself and your family.”

This is the question I was recently asked in an anonymous email.

 I’m going to be brutally honest:

the email in my inbox knocked me on my tush.

For 2 years, I have spoken frankly on my Blog about what it’s like to be cheated on.

How difficult it was when I was  suffering through a traumatic divorce.

How it tore me apart when my son committed suicide.

What it was like to lose my home and face homelessness with 4 kids to care for.

I have over 2,000 followers on my Blog.

I have been nominated for several awards this year for my Blog, and have been asked to speak at several events and read the things I have written.

But that email stuck in my craw.

For a few sleepless nights, I tossed and turned giving those comments a lot of consideration.

 Like anyone, compliments are nice, but criticisms need examination.

 I preach about continual improvement so I had to live my own message.

I started thinking about embarrassment and, more

specifically, shame.

And those are the two emotions that I want to discuss today in order to illustrate todays topic,

“Honor your Emotions instead of stuffing them in a drawer.”

When I first started on my crash and burn journey, I felt a lot of embarrassment, shame, personal emotional pain and fear.

So I hid.

I hid for almost a year thinking that I had done something wrong, that I was a failure and that I was not deserving of love or acceptance.  (Why this happened is another blog altogether, but for the purposes of this blog I need you just to accept me on face value that I was there.)

The second year, I started to share my truth with a few close friends.

I talked about the shame and humiliation of being cheated on.

I talked about the embarrassment and failure of divorce.

I talked about the personal pain of losing my son.

I talked about the fear of losing my home again.

How difficult it was living my life without my son.

And the struggles I was having raising four kids on my own.

My friends listened…and appearantly learned something because they began sending me friends to talk to who were going through a similar experience, because they believed I had something to offer them.

I also began to write.

Writing has always been a huge part of my life, so write I did.

 My words flew out like healing doves, and louder and louder my voice grew.

(I have a dream that someday I will be published.)

 I was constantly being approached by people who had questions about confusion, grief, pain, abuse, death, dying, anxiety, and fear.

The more I spoke, the more people listened.

The more I spoke, the more I realized I was touching on difficult topics that most people kept hidden and were reluctant to discuss.

 There I was blabbing away.

And people listened and people read and people wrote to me.

When I wrote about shame and how I felt shamed by my spouse’s behavior, comments began to fly in. Apparently I wasn’t alone.

I think my favorite email has been from an elderly man that sent me a private message on facebook. His daughter was a friend in Jr. High and he read my blog on her facebook page.

He wrote to me his story about being married for 30 years and for 25 of those his wife had an affair with his life-long best friend. Though they had divorced some 20 years earlier and had raised five children together, the man said he never spoke about what happened. He said this was the elephant in the room at every event since he had not remarried.

He read my post about the shame I had felt when my spouse had cheated.

He said I spoke the words he couldn’t.

He said I explored the feelings he felt.

He said he read as much as he could find about divorce, cheating, grief and loss that I had written because he finally had words to put to his experience.

He also said that, for the first time in two decades, he no longer felt alone and ashamed.

He said he began to use my words at first, then his own words to talk to his children and his family.

He told me that I helped removed the elephant in the room and as a result he and his children and family have better relationships.

From my own experience and hearing the words of this man, I realized that shame can only live in darkness.

 Shame can only live in silence.

Shame can only take over our lives if we don’t call it out of the bushes and give it a beating.

Shame is thinking “I am bad” — and it’s never a good thing.

Everyone feels shame, but people don’t talk about it and certainly don’t talk about dealing with shame and how it can hold us hostage.

The father of my friend had let something that happened to him shame him for over 20 years.

What I would give to give him and other people and myself the time back lost from shame.

So, I would like to publicly answer the anonymous email.

My answer is a resounding NO! 

I am not embarrassed to talk about things that make people uncomfortable.

I am not embarrassed to talk about my feelings, my failings and my faults.

I share these things so that people know at the most basic human level that they are not alone.

I share these things because I had to learn how to handle the issues that arose from the crash-and-burn days from friends, family, experts, books, websites, shows and movies.

Imagine how much less stressful and painful some of these tragic events would have been had I had better tools.

Imagine how much less stressful and painful things could be for our loved ones, our family, our children, our friends and our selves with this awareness.

In hindsight, I think if people only see me as the yapper in the room poking at the sore spots with a flashlight, so be it.

Anyone who thinks I do this for attention, really needs to listen and read because many of my writings are raw, painful, unflattering and brutally truthful to my experience.

That’s not the stuff of literary awards.

But how I use them to inspire others and educate the population sure is.

And getting that email from my friends father was the best gift of 2014.

No, I am not embarrassed.

My children will live in a world where shame has no place.

My children will live in a world where they can talk about their feelings, so they can deal with them. 

My children will live in a world that when bad things happen, they will have the tools to solve their own problems.

My children will know that their Emotions deserve to be honored, and not stuffed into a drawer.

Honoring your emotions  is all about taking ownership

over your feelings, including the ugly ones like shame,

fear, anxiety and grief.

If you are embarrassed by the things I talk about, then I invite you to examine why.

You might just find that shedding the light on your own traumas might just let you experience the freedom of release for the first time in years too.

Since Victor passed away, things were hard for me, and I can’t imagine how it was for you, but I can say that I think that he would be very proud of how (and what) his mom is doing too. You are everything that’s right with women in the world today, and I’m always honored to call you my family. You keep doing what you’re doing, because, in my book, you’ve got something to say, and if you have something to say, then say it. There’s no shame in doing what you feel is right.   2. You know how to handle this…because you did. I think offer the anonymous emailed love…because they only speak from their own point of view (as you stated ) and move on.     1. Thanks Lorrie. That is how I felt…eventually. At first I was hurt. But then, like I said, critism needs to be examined because there is usually truth in it. But upon examination, I decided that speaking my truth was more improtant than hiding it. The experiences of people is one of the best teaching tools available, and I choose to share in the hopes that it will lighten the load of another.

  3. Great response to a very rude email. We all get them from time to time. It’s like there are always people who read your blog just to give you a nasty comment or something. I think it’s great and brave that you speak freely, the world needs more people who do!
    Showing your feelings is a sign of strength for sure.

    We all receive those kind of rude comments. Some people have small minds.
    They send things like that out of jealousy, or fear something you post was directed at them somehow?
    I think you have done an excellent job posting a response to it, now move on. Don’t dwell on it…

    1. Thanks jen. I am not dwelling on it at all. I only posted it as a way to explain my idea for the day of not stuffing our emotions down and forgetting them.
      I am so thankful for my trials, and so I don’t see them as a bad thing to talk about at all.
      Throughout my life, I have had great friends like you…(For all of you out there, Jen and I have been friends since 4th grade) who have shown me that despite lifes trials, I am still loved no matter what.
      My blog is my way of repaying the kindness that has permeiated my entire life.

    God says, He cannot forsake us because He cannot forsake himself. You are exemplifying that and honouring Him by sharing your pain to help others. The wisdom you have learned is to be shared and God’s grace and mercy to by highlighted in the midst of your trials and triumphs. So proud of you. YOU GO GIRL!

      I have heard all my life how once you find your testimony, you cannot keep it to yourself. I don’t think I believed that when I was younger, but as i have gotten older, and truely found my testimony. It is true.
      You are compelled to speak.
      His mercy is my lifeline, and that is the message behind every word I type.

      I agree that, although we WILL eventually experience all of those emotions at some point, we need to learn how to allow them to move in and out of our lives so that we can stay healthy and balanced.
